What are the different types of organized violence?
Sexual violence by networks
"describes networks of mostly extra-family offenders acting on a shared sexual interest in children. These groups generally target vulnerable adolescents and display a preference for one gender or another."
Violence organized by institutions
"refers to the sexual abuse of children by people who work with them in an institutional setting, in which one or more staff members engage in or organize the sexual abuse of children in their care."
Organized violence within the family
"imply cultures of sexual violence within families, in which children are subjected to sexual violence by family members and adults outside the family. It appears that parents (and particularly incestuous fathers) are the most common perpetrators of organized violence. "
Ritual violence
"refers to incidents of organized violence that are structured in a ceremonial or ritualistic manner, often incorporating religious or mythological iconography."
A survey of child protection teams in the UK found that 41% of teams were aware of a case of organized violence in their area in the past two years, and 20% had worked with children suspected of having been victims of organized violence. A broad review of child protection cases in the UK found that organized violence was involved in 3% of sexual violence cases reported to child protection services nationwide.
A 2017 Canadian survey of 150 survivors reports a rate of 50% of victims who have suffered organized violence.
